Competitive intelligence

Answer in brief

Competitive intelligence is the ongoing, legal collection and analysis of information about rivals, such as their prices, products, hiring and positioning.

What it means

Competitive intelligence, or CI, goes beyond a one-time scan. Teams track competitors' pricing pages, product launches, job postings and public statements, then share the findings with sales and product leads. A common output is a battlecard that tells a sales rep how to answer a specific competitor claim. Specialist platforms automate much of the tracking.

AI tools fit well into the analysis step. A model can summarize a week of changes or compare two positioning pages side by side. For desk-based competitor profiles, a deep research agent can gather filings, news and public reviews. The output still needs review, because a rival's marketing claims are not proof of its results. Every claim should link back to where it was seen.
