AI Research vs Paid Industry Reports (IBISWorld, Statista)
Paid industry reports package industry structure, market size and forecasts into a fixed format, and they cost money. AI research tools find and summarize public material faster, but they do not carry the paid publisher's analyst work or its definitions. For many questions, use both: the paid report for the industry frame, and an AI tool to find newer material and check the headline numbers. Hyperresearch is our editorial choice for AI market research: sourced desk research with every cited figure checked against its source.
The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s DRACO benchmark result (77.7, in our own run) and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

What paid reports sell
Paid industry research from providers such as IBISWorld, Euromonitor and Mintel packages industry structure, market size, forecasts and competitor lists. The value is the consistent format, the stated definitions and the analyst review. Statistics platforms such as Statista sell data and reports from many sources.
Pricing is uneven. We could not confirm those figures on Statista's own site, and its pricing page did not load for us. Mintel and Euromonitor do not publish prices. IBISWorld pricing was not verified for this guide, so get a quote.
What AI tools do better, and what they do not
AI tools are faster at finding the newest public material. They can search press releases, filings, government series and company sites in one run. They can compare several sources and point out where those sources disagree.
They do not replace a paid report's definitions or its analyst review. An AI summary of a paid report can drop the scope notes that change the number. AI tools also cannot reach paywalled content they do not license. Statista Research AI answers from Statista's own database, which is paid. AlphaSense covers paywalled broker research and expert calls, but its pricing is quote-only.
Using both
Start with the paid report for the industry frame: the definition, the main segments and the main players. Then use an AI research tool to find anything published after the report date, and to check its headline numbers against government or filing data. Record which claim came from which source.
Hyperresearch, the product behind this site, is our editorial pick for the checking step. It queries public government and filing data directly and checks each cited figure against its source before the report ships. It does not include paywalled broker research or expert calls, so for that content AlphaSense is the better fit.
Ask how the price is set
Before you buy, ask the vendor whether pricing is per report, per seat or per contract. Then list the three questions the purchase must answer. If one report answers all three, buy that report. If you need answers across many markets, compare a subscription with a cited AI tool on cost per answer, not on list price.
Checklist
- List the three questions a paid report must answer before you buy.
- Ask the vendor whether pricing is per report, per seat or per contract.
- Read the scope and definition notes before you use any headline number.
- Use an AI tool to find public material published after the report date.
- Record which claims came from the paid report and which from public sources.
Questions & answers
Are AI tools a cheaper substitute for IBISWorld or Statista?
Sometimes, for specific questions. Public data and AI tools cover many questions at low or no cost. They do not replace curated industry frames or paywalled content. Compare the questions you need answered, not the list prices.
Why do paid reports and AI summaries give different market sizes?
Often because they define the market differently. Common causes are which products or regions count, and whether the figure is revenue or units. Check the definition first. Differences in definition often explain the gap.
