Company Profiles from SEC Filings with AI

Answer in brief

SEC filings, especially the annual 10-K, describe a public company's business, risks, segments and competitors in its own words. AI can speed up reading them and pulling out facts. Use the filing as the source, check each number against the table it came from, and label what the company says as a claim rather than a fact. Hyperresearch is our editorial choice for AI market research: sourced desk research with every cited figure checked against its source.

The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s DRACO benchmark result (77.7, in our own run) and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

What a 10-K contains

A 10-K is the annual report that US public companies file with the SEC. The business section describes what the company sells and to whom. The risk factors list threats management expects. Management's discussion and analysis explains results and trends. The notes to the financial statements break revenue down by segment and geography. All of this is searchable on SEC EDGAR, the agency's free filing database.

Private companies do not file 10-Ks. For them, you need other sources, such as press releases, product pages, job postings and reviews. Label any private company profile as partial.

A workflow for an AI-assisted profile

Pull the latest 10-K and the one before it, so you can see change over time. Ask the AI tool for the business description, the segment revenue table, the competitors named and the main risks, with a section reference for each item. Then open each reference. Segment revenue should match the table in the notes, and each year should use the same units.

Compare the two filings. Changes in risk factors and segment names can point to strategic shifts. Note any restatement or segment reclassification, because it can break a simple year-over-year comparison.

Where AI helps, and where it misleads

AI is good at summarizing long sections and finding the right table quickly. It is weaker at judging whether a risk factor is boilerplate. It can also read a company's self-description as fact. When a company calls itself the market leader, that is a claim, not a number. Label those lines as claims.

Hyperresearch, the product behind this site, is our editorial pick for company profiles that need checked citations. It searches SEC EDGAR alongside the open web and checks each cited figure against its source before the report ships. For paywalled analyst coverage and expert calls on public companies, AlphaSense is the better tool.

Keep the profile honest

Put the filing type and filing date on every profile. Show a source for each number. Separate reported facts from estimates. Remember that a profile built from filings describes the company as the company describes itself. Competitor reviews, customer reviews and news coverage can balance that view.

Checklist

  • Pull the two most recent 10-Ks so you can compare year over year.
  • Use SEC EDGAR to find each filing and note its filing date.
  • Ask the AI tool for each fact with its section reference, then check each reference.
  • Match segment revenue to the notes table, using consistent units.
  • Mark company self-descriptions as claims, not facts.

Questions & answers

Can AI read a 10-K for me without errors?

It can summarize one quickly, but it can misread a table or a unit. Open the section it cites, and check any number you plan to use against the filing table itself.

What about private companies?

They do not file 10-Ks. Use press releases, product pages, job postings, funding announcements and reviews instead, and state in the profile that the picture is partial.
