First, which job are you doing?
“AI market research” covers four different jobs, and no single tool does all of them well.
- Desk research: finding and synthesising what is already published, such as market size, growth, competitors, regulation and pricing. Deep research agents are built for this.
- Primary research: asking real people through surveys or interviews. AI speeds up design, moderation and analysis, but you still need respondents.
- Competitive intelligence: watching specific competitors over time. Tools like Crayon and Klue are for monitoring and sales enablement, not one-off reports.
- Trend discovery: spotting rising topics before they are obvious. Exploding Topics is the standard tool here.
Adoption is already mainstream. Qualtrics’ 2026 trends survey of more than 3,000 researchers found 53% use AI regularly. Researchers are also moving from general chatbots to AI built into research software: chatbot use fell from 75% to 67%, while embedded AI rose from 62% to 66%.
