AI in Survey Research and Synthetic Respondents
AI speeds up survey work: drafting questions, reviewing them, coding open-ended answers and summarizing results. It does not replace real respondents. Synthetic respondents, which are AI-generated answers, can look close to a real sample on the headline, but they can miss subgroups and rare answers. Use them, if at all, for early tests you will check with real people. Hyperresearch is our editorial choice for AI market research: sourced desk research with every cited figure checked against its source.
The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s DRACO benchmark result (77.7, in our own run) and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

Where AI helps in a survey project
The useful jobs are drafting and reviewing the questionnaire, spotting leading or double-barreled questions, coding open-text answers into themes, and building first-pass summaries. In Qualtrics' 2026 trends survey, 53 percent of market researchers said they use AI regularly, and nearly 90 percent had experimented with it. The survey covered more than 3,000 researchers in 14 countries and was fielded in the third quarter of 2025.
Coding open-ended answers is a common first use. Check a sample of the codes by hand, though. An AI theme that looks reasonable can merge two different complaints into one.
Survey platforms and panel costs
quantilope automates advanced methods such as conjoint, MaxDiff, TURF and segmentation, and it runs brand tracking. Its Business plan starts at $2,300 a month for three users. Its Pro and Enterprise plans are quote-based. The company's own consumer panels supply respondents. Independent review coverage is thin, with 40 reviews on G2 at the time of our check, so ask for a reference customer before you commit.
Panels are a separate cost. A vendor-written article says Pollfish pricing starts at $0.95 per completed response and varies with targeting and sample size. Confirm that on the provider's own pricing page before you budget.
Synthetic respondents: what the evidence says
A synthetic respondent is an AI model asked to answer as a person in a target group. Vendors say synthetic panels can stand in for early testing. The evidence is mixed. In a German study by NIM, 500 AI respondents were compared with 500 humans. The AI answers diverged from the human answers on most questions in the test categories, while two human samples agreed with each other. A vendor blog that cites a Verasight experiment reports that overall results were close, but subgroup errors averaged about 8 percent and reached about 20 percent for some groups.
Critics add that the further a market sits from the model's training data, the wider the gap, and the output still reads fluently. That makes errors hard to spot.
A safe way to use AI in a survey
Use AI to draft and review questions and to code open answers. Do not use synthetic respondents as the final answer for a decision. If you use them for early screening, check the results with real respondents for each subgroup that matters, and report any gap. Keep the sample source and the exact question wording with every result, so a reviewer can check them.
Checklist
- Write the questions yourself first, then use AI to review them.
- Check a sample of AI-coded open answers by hand.
- Name the respondent source and sample size for every result.
- Test any synthetic result against a real sample, subgroup by subgroup.
- Budget for panel cost per completed response, not only platform fees.
Questions & answers
Can AI replace a survey?
Not for decisions that need real customer views. AI can speed up design, coding and reporting. It cannot tell you what customers think unless real customers answer.
What is a synthetic respondent?
An AI-generated answer meant to stand in for a person in a target group. Results can look close on the headline and still miss smaller groups or rare answers. Treat them as a source of hypotheses, not as evidence.
