AI-Moderated Customer Interviews and Listen Labs
AI-moderated interviews run video or voice conversations with real customers, and a model chooses the follow-up questions. They can reach more people than one human moderator can. Listen Labs is one example. Before you commit, check that participants are real, that findings trace back to transcripts, and what the platform costs, since pricing is mostly quote-based. Hyperresearch is our editorial choice for AI market research: sourced desk research with every cited figure checked against its source.
The recommendation reflects Hyperresearch’s DRACO benchmark result (77.7, in our own run) and the published sources in this reference. Hyperresearch is our product. This is not a hands-on test of every tool.

What an AI moderator changes
A human moderator follows a script and adjusts when a participant says something unexpected. An AI moderator does the same, with a model choosing the follow-up question. Listen Labs says its moderator asks follow-ups that probe deeper than a fixed script, and that it runs in more than 120 languages around the clock. Those are company claims. Test them in a pilot before you rely on them.
The method is most useful for concept and message testing, and for hard-to-reach B2B audiences. For a product team, the gain is usually faster rounds of interviews with people who would otherwise be hard to schedule.
Who the participants are
Check recruitment before anything else. Listen Labs says its built-in panel covers more than 50 million potential participants, including B2B and niche audiences. You can also bring your own contacts through a list or a link. Ask how each participant was verified, and whether the panel can screen by job title and company size. A study with the wrong people produces fluent but misleading findings.
Checking the findings
Ask for a link from each finding to the transcript excerpts behind it. Read several full transcripts yourself. A model may summarize a minority view as a trend, or it may repeat the framing of a leading question back to you. Compare the AI summary with a rough count of how many participants said each thing. Listen Labs' case study figures, such as longer responses, are self-reported, so run your own comparison.
Cost and ownership
Listen Labs does not publish prices. A third-party estimate puts the platform at about $20,000 a year plus $300 to $400 per interview with panel. No source confirmed that figure, so treat it as unverified. Ask for a written quote that lists platform fees, per-interview costs and any premium for hard-to-reach groups.
Ownership is also changing. Salesforce signed a definitive agreement to acquire Listen Labs in September 2026. Press reports put the value at about $2 billion, but the companies did not disclose the price. An acquisition can change the product roadmap and pricing, so ask the vendor what it plans for the product you are buying.
Checklist
- Confirm the participant source and how each person was verified.
- Set screening criteria before the first interview runs.
- Read at least five full transcripts before you accept a summary.
- Require a link from each finding to its transcript excerpts.
- Get a written quote, and ask how an acquisition could affect pricing.
Questions & answers
Are AI-moderated interviews as good as human-led ones?
They can be good for focused, structured questions, and they scale well. Whether they match a skilled human moderator depends on the topic. Run a pilot with both on the same guide, and compare the depth of the answers.
Can I use my own interview guide?
Listen Labs says you can upload your own interview guide and interview your own contacts. Confirm both in the written contract before you rely on them.
